Claflin Softball Completes Series Sweep of Benedict

Orangeburg, (4-18-15) – The Claflin University softball team defeated Benedict, 10-9 and 10-2, to complete the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) three-game series sweep.  With the wins, the Lady Panthers improves to 20-14 overall and 10-9 in the SIAC.  Benedict falls to 11-25 overall and 6-11 in the SIAC.
 
In Game Two of the doubleheader, Claflin jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead by the bottom first.   Benedict scored two runs off three hits with one Lady Panthers error in the top of the second to knot the game at 2-2.  Claflin quickly regrouped scoring two runs off two hits in the bottom of the second and one run off two hits and two Lady Tigers errors in the bottom of the third to take a 5-2 lead.  The Lady Panthers would tack on one run in the fourth to push its lead to 6-2.  Chelsea Hall hit a grand-slam in the bottom fifth to give Claflin a 10-2 lead and end the game in five.
 
Benedict scored two runs to open Game One of the doubleheader.  Hall led off the Lady Panthers half of the inning with a solo home-run to cut the deficit to one, 1-2.  Claflin put up two additional runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead.  Both teams scored three runs in the second.  The Lady Panthers took a 7-5 lead into the sixth and what appeared to be control of the contest.  After both teams scored one run in the sixth, the Lady Tigers put up three runs in the top of the seventh to take an 8-9 lead.  Hall, who played solid all day, had a RBI double to score Arielle Hayes to tie the game at 9-all.  Senior Alice Boone had an RBI single to bring Hall across the plate for the winning run.
 
Hall went 6-for-9 with three runs and three RBI's to lead the Lady Panthers on the day.  Boon went 3-for-6 with two walks, two runs and three RBI's and Nyesha Arnold went 4-for-6 with one run and five RBI's.  Arnold also picked up the win in Game One.  Erin Lipps went all five innings to pick up the win in Game Two.
 
Benedict was led by Bergearia Major who went 2-for-5 with one walk and one run.  Sabriya Brooks went 3-for-6 with one run and one RBI on the day.  Shanessa Rees was the losing pitcher of record in Game One and Kendall James was the losing pitcher in Game Two.
 
The Lady Panthers will have four days off before heading to Columbia, S.C. to participate in the 2015 SIAC post-season tournament which is scheduled for Thursday-Saturday, Apr. 23-25.
 
Game Note:  It was senior day for Claflin.  Seven members of the Lady Panther Softball Team were honored in a ceremony in-between games...There was a 1.5 hour rain delay prior to the start of the contest.
