Claflin Falls to Kentucky State in Opening Game of SIAC Softball Tournament

Columbia, S.C.—The Claflin University softball team dropped its first game of the 2015 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) softball tournament, falling to Kentucky State, 0-3, in the double-elimination tournament.  The tournament, which is being contested at the Polo Road Park in Columbia, S.C., will run thru Saturday, Apr. 25 with a rain date of Sunday, Apr. 26.

The offense for both teams was stagnant over the first two innings.  Kentucky State broke the scoreless tie, putting up two runs off one hit and two Claflin errors in the bottom of the third to take a 0-2 lead.  Both teams defense was solid over the next two and a half innings.  The Thorobreds capitalized off the Lady Panthers error once again, as the leadoff batter reached base off an error by the third baseman in the bottom of the sixth.  She would eventually score off a single by Tyniesha Wilson to give Kentucky State the 0-3 lead, its margin of victory.

Pitcher Erin Lipps, who was credited with the loss on the day, had two of the Claflin three hits for the game.  Kayla Sanderson knocked out the Lady Panthers only other hit for the game.

Cheyenne Carpenter was solid on the mound for the Thorobreds, going all seven innings, allowing three hits versus 13 strikeouts.

The Lady Panthers will face Albany State, tomorrow, Friday, Apr. 24 in the elimination game.  First Pitch is set for 10 a.m. at the Polo Road Park in Columbia, S.C.
