Francis Marion Tops Claflin in Midweek Baseball Matchup

Florence, S.C. - Junior right-hander Fernando Pinillos had a strong outing against Claflin, pitching six innings as Francis Marion defeated Claflin, 2-10, in a midweek non-conference baseball matchup in Florence.  With the win the Patriots improves to 23-12 while the loss drops Claflin 15-24 on the season.

Jalen Thompson collected two hits, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame and was the only Panther player to finish with multiple hits.  Sophomore Rashad Bivens went 1-for-4.  Jesse Minter, Sixto Guerrero, and McKinley Leverette each earned one hit in the game.  Lefty, Wendell Ferguson (0-4) was tagged with the loss on Tuesday.

Pinillos (3-0) held Claflin to just five hits, and allowed only three walks in the win. The Patriots were led by Cole Morris, who went 2-for-3 with two walks on the night.  Morris came up big in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run double to crack open the game.  Designated-hitter Ryan Miller went 2-for-4, drove in two runs.  Miller also scored two runs of his own.  Randy Loew also went 2-for-3 and scored twice.

Francis Marion scored early in the bottom of the second inning after Matt Rubino walked, and then stole second base.  Rubino took advantage of bad hop hit by right-fielder, Zac Lenns to score the Patriots first run of the night.  Francis Marion second run came in the bottom of the fifth, when Morris walked with two outs and advanced to third off of a single to the right side by J.D. Crowe, and consequently scored off of a wild pitch.

The Patriots widened their margin in the bottom of the sixth with Morris' double.  Francis Marion put up four more runs in the seventh inning.

Trailing 10-0 heading into the top of the eighth, the Panthers placed two batters on base via an error and walk.  With two on, Bivens knocked one down the right field line, to score the Panthers only two runs on the night.
