Claflin Battles in Loss to Miles College

Orangeburg, S.C. – The Claflin University men's basketball team battled to the end, but fell just short, dropping a 74-72 decision to Miles College in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) basketball game Saturday in a at the Tullis Arena.  The loss, which snapped a two-game win streak, drops the Panthers to 4-7 overall and winless in conference play at 0-4.
 
Adolph Caldwell came off the bench to lead three players in double-figures for the Panthers with 16 points, including four three-pointers.
 
Austin Lawton and Patrell Rogers tossed 13 points apiece.  Lawton also pulled game-high 10 rebounds along with seven blocked shots.
 
Triston Thompson added nine points for the Panthers in the loss.
 
Maiscei Grier of Miles led all scorers with a game-high 25 points. Joshua Johnson added 12 points while Josh Samuels dropped in nine in the game.  Eric Hailliwell pulled in seven rebounds to lead the team on the boards.
 
The contest came down to last minute of play, where Miles outscored Claflin 7-5 during the stretch.  With the game knotted at 67-all 1:36, the scoring went stagnant until a three-point play by the Golden Bears Grier with 39 second remaining gave them a three-point advantage.  Miles would score the next four points from the charity stripe, to push the lead to five, 74-69, with 13 seconds remaining.   
 
Rogers and Trevor Dantzler kept Claflin within striking distance. Rogers made a layup followed by a three-pointer by Dantzler to cut the deficit to two, 74-72.
 
In the first half, the Panthers took an eight-point lead at 23-15 off a Caldwell three-pointer at the 8:05 mark. Claflin maintained a safe cushion until the last two minutes of the half.  Trailing 32-25, Miles scored the last seven points of the half, pulling even at the intermission at 32-32.
 
Lawton and solid free-throw shooting played a sufficient role in the Panthers first half success. Lawton scored six points with three rebounds and a pair of blocked. From the charity line, Claflin was 13-of-18. For the game, the Panthers connected on 23-of-33.
 
Claflin will conclude a three-game homestand Monday against conference foe Tuskegee University at 7:30 p.m. at the Tullis Arena.
