Rogers, Watson lifts Claflin past Fort Valley State

Orangeburg, S.C. – Patrell Rogers scored a game-high 24 points and Karee Watson chipped in 13 points, nine in the second half, as the Claflin University Panthers rallied to defeat Fort Valley State, 79-74, Saturday in at the Tullis Arena.
 
With the come-from-behind victory, Claflin improved to 8-10 overall and 4-6 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC).
 
Adolph Caldwell and Trevor Dantzler came off the bench to score nine points each, while Triston Thompson tossed in seven points. Ryan McNeill-Moses had a well-balanced game as he contributed seven points with 10 rebounds, five assists, five steals and two block shots.  Watson led Claflin on the boards with 13 rebounds.
 
Maritea Duke and Ralph Wilson led Fort Valley State, now 3-17 and 1-9 in the SIAC, with 14 points apiece.
 
The Panthers started their comeback after trailing 63-57 with seven minutes left in the game. Over the next two minutes, Claflin would rally to take its first lead since early in the opening half at 66-65 off a Dantzler three-pointer with 4:13 remaining.
 
Following an exchange of baskets and two ties, Watson gave Claflin the lead for good, hitting one-of-two free-throws to give the Panthers the one point lead, 72-71, with 1:57 left.  The Panthers scored the next three points on a free-throw by Rogers and Watson's layup to increase their lead 75-71 with 40 seconds to go in the contest.  Fort Valley State could get no closer than two points the rest of the way.
 
In the first half, the Panthers jumped to a 15-6 lead on a Rogers three-pointer at the 14:22 mark.
The next eight minutes would be the reverse as Fort Valley State erupted for a 20-4 run. The spurt gave the visitors a seven-point cushion at 26-19 with 6:13 left in the opening half. 
 
Claflin pulled to within 28-23 on Caldwell's jumper at the 4:54 mark, but Fort Valley State went on a 7-4 run to close out the half.
 
Fort Valley State led 37-27 at the half.
 
Claflin will take to road Thursday for an SIAC match-up against Paine College in Augusta, Ga. The game is set for a 7:30 p.m. tip at the Heal Complex on the Paine College campus.  The Panthers will return home next Saturday, Jan. 20 to host Benedict.
