Claflin Defeats Paine 70-58 in a SIAC Men’s Basketball Contest

Augusta, Ga.—Ryan McNeill-Moses scored a game-high 20 points with six rebounds as the Claflin University Panthers defeated Paine College, 70-58, in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) matchup in Augusta, Ga.  The win pushes the Panthers to 9-10 overall and 5-6 in the SIAC.

Patrell Rogers scored 18 points and Austin Lawton had a game-high 10 rebounds with seven points and four blocks for Claflin in the win.

Arnis Libazs scored 20 points with six rebounds to lead Paine, who fell to 4-16 overall and 1-10 in the SIAC.  Christian Nobles contributed 14 points with six rebounds and Donald Quarles also pulled in six rebounds in the loss.

Claflin scored the first two points of the second half and never looked back.  The Panthers increased its half-time lead to 19, 41-22, with 16:20 remaining in the ball game.  The Panthers maintained control throughout the second half pushing its lead to 20 twice.  Paine had one last spurt late, pulling within 13, 66-54, with 1:51 remaining, but the Panthers remained poised down the stretch en route to the 12 point win.

The Panthers  started the game very aggressive, jumping out to a 10-3 lead over the first four minutes of the game.  After Paine managed to cut the lead to one, Claflin used a 6-2 run over  a two-minute period to push its lead to 20-13 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the half.   The Panthers pushed its lead to 10, 25-15 but Paine kept pressing.  The Lions managed to pull within six, 19-25, but Claflin maintained its poise, pushing the lead back up to 10, 29-19, with 3:08 remaining in the half.  The Panthers would score the only four points over the final three minutes of the half to enjoy the 14 point half-time lead, 19-33.

Claflin will return home this Saturday, Jan. 30, to host Benedict in an 8 p.m. SIAC contest.  It will be Greek Night in Tullis Arena.
