Claflin Knockoff Benedict in Overtime

Orangeburg, S.C. – The Claflin University Panthers outscored Benedict College 19-12 in overtime to pull out a 77-70 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win Saturday at the Tullis Arena.
 
With the extra period win, Claflin evened its season record at 10-10 and 6-6 in the conference.
This mark the third straight time that Claflin has defeated Benedict.
 
The contest was sent into overtime on a Ryan McNeill-Moses' put back-in with five seconds left to tie the game at 58-58.  Claflin rallied from a 58-53 deficit with 32 seconds left when Trevor Dantzler drilled a three-pointer from the corner followed by the McNeill-Moses basket.
 
Patrell Rogers, who had a game-high 18 points, kept the Panthers within striking, scoring seven points within a two-minute span late in the game.
 
Adolph Caldwell came off the bench to score 15 points, while Dantzler added 14. Austin Lawton chipped in 13 points and 12 rebounds, while McNeill-Moses scored six points and pulled down 12 rebounds.
 
Benedict, which dropped to 14-7 overall and 9-3 in the conference, was led by Lafonzo Smith with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
 
In the first half, Benedict held the lead for the first seven-plus minutes of the contest, owning a three point lead, 10-7, with 13:31 remaining.  Claflin erupted for 9-1 to take its biggest lead of the first half at advantage at 16-11 at the 9:07 mark.  Caldwell had eight points, including a pair of three-pointers, during the run for the Panthers.
 
Benedict rallied to regain the lead at 18-17 on a three-pointer from Jordan Smith 7:23 left.
The lead would change hand three times over the final six minutes of the period before Quayshun Hawkins drilled a three-pointer to put Benedict up by three, 28-25, at the half. Hawkins drilled a three-point at the 1:24 mark.
 
Claflin will return to action Thursday, traveling to Clark Atlanta for SIAC contest.
