Claflin Defeats Clark Atlanta in SIAC East Division Men’s Basketball Matchup

Atlanta, Ga.—Triston Thompson had 17 points and Austin Lawton recorded a double-double 14 points-10 rebounds as the Claflin University men's basketball team defeated Clark Atlanta 75-73, in Atlanta in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) contest.  The win pushes the Panthers to 11-10 overall and 7-6 in the conference.
 
Clark Atlanta falls to 6-16 overall and 4-9 in the SIAC.
 
The Panthers had four players to finish in double-figures as Ryan McNeill-Moses and Trevor Dantzler finished with 11 apiece.  Lawton also rejected four shots on the night for the Panthers who shot 86.4 percent from the charity stripe.
 
Claflin opened the second half with a 13-6 run to increase its halftime lead to nine, 39-30.  Clark Atlanta kept pushing, using a 14-2 run over a four minute stretch to take its first lead since the 11:52 mark of the first half, 44-43.  The exchanged runs over the next 17 points exchanging the lead until the 3:05 mark when Dantzler hit a three-pointer to put the Panthers up for good at 65-62.
 
The Panthers got on the scoreboard first off a layup by McNeill-Moses just 18 seconds into the contest.  Claflin scored the next two points off a layup by Karee Watson but Clark Atlanta quickly countered.  Clark Atlanta went on an 8-0 run over the next five minutes to take the 8-4 lead with 15:16 remaining.  Claflin strung together an 8-0 run of its own to regain the 12-8 lead with just over 11 minutes remaining in the half. 
 
Both team's offenses went stagnant for a three minute period.  A layup by Thompson snapped the drought and sparked a 10-3 run to push Claflin's lead to 22-13 with 5:41 left.  Clark Atlanta closed the first half on an 11-4 run to cut the deficit to two, 26-24, heading into intermission.
 
Claflin will return home on Monday, Feb. 8 when they host Paine College in a 5:30 p.m. SIAC East Division contest.  It will be Orange and Maroon Spirit Night in Tullis Arena.  All fans are encouraged to wear orange, maroon or a combination of orange and maroon.
