Charles Basket in the Closing Seconds Lifts Claflin Past Limestone in Men’s Basketball Action

Orangeburg, S.C.--Jaleeal Charles tip-in with eight seconds remaining lifted Claflin University to a 70-68 win over Limestone College in a men's basketball game Monday at the Tullis Arena.

With the non-conference win, Claflin improved to 5-4 on the season.

"This was a big win for us," Claflin Coach Ricky Jackson said. "Limestone is a very good ball club. They're a seasoned team with a lot of good guys that play well together. I thought our size and ability to get the ball down low were the deciding factors."

With the Panthers up 68-63 with 2:06 left, Limestone scored five straight points. The run tied the game at 68-68 with 1:12 remaining.

After both teams failed to score on their next possession, Claflin had the ball with 30 seconds left. Charles powered his way up for a layup but missed the basket. On the play, Charles was able to tap in the shot for what proved to be the game-winner.

"Charles was very active down low," Jackson said. "On the game-winner, he was very aggressive after missing the layup. He was able to tap the ball in following the missed shot."

Charles, making his first appearance as a member of the team, finished the game with a team-high 18 points and eight rebounds.

Kobie Williams and Trevor Dantzler contributed 12 points each for the Panthers.

Austin Lawton added eight points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Limestone, now 9-2, was led by Shaun Stewart with a game-high 21 points. Shag Dance had 13 points and seven rebounds for the Saints.

The second half of the contest was back-and-forth all the way. Claflin held the largest lead of the period at six points, 66-60, with 4:06 left.  It was Charles that provided the margin off a three-point play.

Limestone then rallied to tie the game in closing at 68-68.

In the early goings of the first half, it was Williams that generated most of the Panthers offense.  He scored eight of the Panthers first 13 points as Claflin led 13-9 at the 13:50 mark.

An 11-0 run by Limestone wiped out the Panthers lead, putting the Saints out in front 20-13 with 12:05 left in the period.
Charles kept the Panthers within striking distance over the next 8-plus minutes. He tossed in eight points as Claflin outscored Limestone 17-13 to trail 33-30 at 4:03 mark.

The Panthers tied the contest at 38-38 with 25 seconds left in the half off a three-point play from Trevor Dantzler.

Limestone regained the advantage on a dunk by Macoumba Kane with 11 seconds left for the 40-38 lead at the half.

Claflin will take a break for the Christmas Holidays before participating in the Shaw University Tournament in Raleigh, N.C. The Panthers will face Livingstone College (Dec. 28th) and host Shaw (Dec. 29th).
