Claflin Baseball Sweeps Florida Memorial to Pick Up First Two Wins of the Season

Orangeburg, S.C.—The Claflin University baseball team defeated Florida Memorial, 10-5 and 5-3, in a non-conference doubleheader in Orangeburg.  The sweep gave the Panthers their first two wins of the season and pushes the team record to 2-4.
 
In Game One Claflin scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead over Florida Memorial.  The Lions put up two runs in the top of the third to take a 3-2 lead.  Reggie Rogers led off the bottom of the third with a double and scored off an RBI single by Michael Kendricks to tie the game at three-all.  An RBI single by Johnny Stevenson followed by an RBI single by Rashad Hilton pushed Claflin lead to two, 5-3, heading into the fifth.  Florida Memorial managed to put up one run in the top of the fifth but the Panthers put up three runs off three hits in the bottom of the fifth to take the 8-4.  Claflin put up two addition runs in the bottom of sixth and allowed just one Lions run in the top of the seventh en route to the 10-5 Game One victory.
 
Kendricks recorded four one run with four hits and four RBI's to lead the Panthers.  Brown was the top run producer, scoring three runs off two hits in the win.
 
Daniel Lopez scored one run off one hit with two RBI's for Florida Memorial in the loss.
 
Elijah McKinnis picked up the win and Emmanuel Mitchell picked up the save for the Panthers.  Tony Gonzalez-Funes was the loser of Game One.
 
Game Two was more competitive.  Florida Memorial scored the first two runs of the game.  The Panthers got one of the runs back, as Kendricks scored off an RBI single by Christopher Gilliam.  The Lions scored one run in the top of the third, but Claflin quickly countered scoring two runs of its half of the inning to tie the game at four-all.  Gilliam singled to bring in Rashad Bivens to break the 4-4 tie in the bottom of the fifth.  The Panthers scored one additional run in the bottom of the sixth while holding Florida Memorial scoreless en route to the 5-3 Game Two victory and the sweep.
 
Dillion Parker pitched a solid five innings to pick up the win.  Keamond Eison faced five batters in the top of the sixth to pick up the save.
 
Scott Berman was the losing pitcher for Florida Memorial who fell to 0-6 on the short season.
 
Claflin will travel to Lakeland, Fla., to face Florida Southern in a three-game series this Friday-Saturday, Feb. 12-13.
