Lander defeats Claflin in Collegiate Baseball

Orangeburg, S.C. – The Claflin University baseball team fell to Lander University, 14-5, Wednesday in an NCAA Division II non-conference game at Historic Mirmow Field.
 
The loss dropped Claflin to 2-8 on the season.
 
Lander, which improved to 8-2, scored six run in the opening frame to take a 6-0 lead.
 
The Panthers scored one run in their bottom half of the first. Reginald Rogers one out double drove home Jesse Minter, who drew a walk to start the inning put the Panthers on the board in their half of the first.
 
Lander built a 7-1 lead with a single run in the third.
 
Claflin added an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth as Johnny Stevenson scored from third on a wild pitch.
 
Lander pushed its lead 10-2 with a pair of runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.
The Panthers continued to battle pushing across two runs in the bottom of the seventh as Stevenson scored from third on another wild pitch and Jabari Brown produced an RBI single that brought home Christopher Gilliam.
 
Lander broke the contest open with five runs in the next two innings for a 14-4 advantages.  Claflin last run came in the bottom of the ninth as Elliott Melton scored on yet another wild pitch.
 
Claflin, which played errorless ball, had five hits in the game.
 
Torriun Towers suffered the loss for Claflin, while Sam Linn picked up the win for Lander.
 
Claflin will face Selma University in doubleheader Thursday at Historic Mirmow Field. The first game is scheduled for 1 p.m. The second game will follow approximately 20 minutes at the conclusion.
