Claflin Softball Opens SIAC Play with a 19-1 Win over Paine

Augusta, Ga.—The Claflin University softball opened its 2016 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) play with a 19-1 win of Paine College Friday, Feb. 26, 2016 in Augusta. 
 
Claflin (4-7, 1-0 SIAC) opened the scoring in the game putting up one run off hits in the top of the first.  The Lady Panthers scored its second and third runs off two Paine errors in the top of the third to take a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of third.
 
Tiara Norman led off the fourth inning by reaching base via and scored off an RBI single by Kayla Cato to push the Claflin ahead by four.  An RBI triple by Jamelah Thomas followed by a two-run homer by Chelsea Hall gave the Lady Panthers a commanding 7-0 lead with one out.  Claflin would bring xxx across the plate to take the six additional runs.  In the fourth inning alone, the Lady Panthers had 10 runs and 10 hits.
 
Claflin maintained its moment in the top of the fifth, scoring six runs off three hits to take a 19-0 lead into middle of the fifth.  Paine managed to score one run in its half of the fifth as Rickary Holloman hit a two out single to bring home Lasharon Salahuddin.
 
Jasmine Squirewell led the Lady Panthers offensively with three runs off three hits, including a double, and one RBI.  LaKaylin Lee had two runs with two hits and Tiaria Norman had two runs with one hit and one RBI in the win.  Claflin also got offensive help from Jamelah Thomas with one run off two hits and two RBI's and Chelsea Hall who add a homerun and two RBI's in the win.
 
Nyesha Arnold pitched four solids innings giving no runs with two hits, no walks and five strikeouts pick up the win.  The losing pitcher for was Paine De'jour Davis.
 
The teams will close out the series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 27 at Laney High Field in Augusta.
