Claflin Defeats Paine 83-77 in Overtime

Orangeburg, S.C. – Ryan McNeill-Moses three-point play with 37 seconds left in overtime lifted Claflin University Panthers to an 83-77 win over Paine College Monday at the Tullis Arena.
 
The extra period victory upped Claflin's record to 12-11 overall and 8-7 in the SIAC
 
Adolph Caldwell came off the bench to drop in a team-high 21 points.  The Panthers had four players to score in double-figures as De'shon Nails scored 12 points and Ryan McNeill-Moses and Austin Lawton scored 10 points apiece.  McNeill-Moses paced Claflin on the boards with 11.  Karee Watson contributed nine points and eight rebounds in the win.
 
With the contest tied 68-68 at the end of regulation, the Panthers outscored Paine 15-9 in the overtime period.
 
With the game knotted at 76-76 with 1:37 left in overtime Claflin took control of the ball. 
With 10 seconds showing on the shot clock, Caldwell inbounded the ball down low to McNiell-Moses. He powered inside his for a layup and was fouled on the play.  McNeill-Moses promptly hit the free throw, giving the Panthers a 79-76 lead with 37 seconds remaining.
 
Nails added four free-throws in the last 11 seconds for the final margin of victory.
 
In regulation, it appeared Claflin had the contest safely in hand with 60-49 lead with 7:42 left.
Paine quickly tied the game at 66-all with 2:43 left and led 68-67 at the 1:53 mark.
Lawton sent the game into overtime, hitting one-of-two free throws with 1:28 remaining.
 
The first half was close throughout with Claflin holding a slim 34-33 halftime lead.  After two early ties, the last being 7-7 at the 15:30 mark, the Panthers scored six unanswered points to lead 13-7 with 13:58 left in the half.  The Panthers pushed the advantage to 24-17 with 8:03 showing on the clock.
 
Paine rallied to pull dead-even at 25-25 with just under six minutes remaining. The lead was short lived as Triston Thompson scored on a layup, putting Claflin up 27-25 with 5:09 left.
McNeill-Moses hit a three-pointer one minute later and the Panthers were up 30-25.
 
Paine battled back to outscore Claflin 8-4 in the final three-plus minutes to trail 34-33 at the intermission.
 
Claflin will travel to Columbia to battle arch-rival Benedict College in an important SIAC rematch.
