Claflin Softball Goes 2-0 on Day One of the SIAC Crossover

Jasper, Ala.—The Claflin University softball team defeated Lane College and Stillman to go 2-0 on day one of the 2016 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) crossover.  The tournament, which features teams from 14 SIAC schools, will run thru Saturday, March 19 at Memorial Park in Jasper, Ala.
 
In their first game on the day, Claflin (13-15, 6-1 SIAC), defeated Lane College 23-4 in five innings.  The Lady Panthers scored 12 runs in the first, 10 in the second and one in the third en route to its 23 runs.  Claflin had 18 hits including four homeruns in Game One.
 
The Lady Panthers had six players in the lineup to record two-or-more hits in the contest led by Kayla Cato, the SIAC Player of the Week, who scored three runs with three hits and four RBI's.  LaKaylin Lee had three runs with three hits and three RBI's while Kaela Robinson had three runs off three hits with two RBI's in the win.  Other players with multiple hits include: Jamelah Thomas, Tiaria Norman and Chelise Morman who finished with two hits each.
 
Lee was the winning pitcher of record in Game One. 
 
Claflin put up three runs in the top of the first, to start to the scoring in Game Two.  The Lady Panthers put up a run in the top of the second to take the 4-0 lead before Stillman could get on the board.  The Lady Tigers managed to score two runs in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to 4-2 but the Lady Panthers were not done.  Claflin scored two additional runs in the fifth and two in the seventh while holding the Lady Tigers scoreless over the final four-of-five innings.  Stillman put up one run in the bottom of the seventh as they fell 8-3 to the Lady Panthers in Game Two.
 
Cato scored two runs with four hits, including a homerun, and seven RBI's to lead Claflin in Game Two. Morman and Shaquailla German scored two runs apiece in the win.
 
Norman, this week SIAC pitcher of the week, picked up the complete game win in Game Two.
 
Claflin will face Kentucky State at 12 noon, Miles College at 4 p.m. and Spring Hill College at 6 p.m. on day two of the crossover (Friday, March 18).
