Claflin Sweeps Fayetteville State in Non-Conference Softball Doubleheader

Fayetteville, N.C.--The Claflin University softball team swept Fayetteville State, 8-3 and 6-4, in a non-conference doubleheader at the Lamon St. Park in Fayetteville.
 
With the wins, the Lady Panthers improved to 19-18 overall.  The Broncos dropped to 10-16 overall.
 
Fayetteville State jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the bottom of the second of Game One.  After neither team managed to score in the third inning, Claflin bats came to life.  The Lady Panthers used three hits and three Lady Broncos' errors to score five runs in the top of the fourth to take the two run lead, 5-3.  Claflin scored one run in the top of the fifth and two in the seventh while holding Fayetteville State scoreless over the six innings en route to the 8-3 win
 
Chelise Morman scored two runs with three hits, including a homerun, and three RBI's to lead Claflin.  Courtney Burns added two runs off two hits in Game One.
 
Tiaria Norman, who came in on relief, did not allow any runs or hits while recording 10 strikeouts en route to picking up the Game One win.
 
Claflin put up one run in the first and four in the third to take a commanding 5-0 lead in Game Two.  Fayetteville State scored three runs in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to two, 5-3 after three complete. 
 
Kayla Cato led off the fifth inning with a single and advanced to second on an error by Fayetteville State's short-stop.  After advancing to third on a groundout by Morman, Cato stole home to push the Lady Panthers lead to three, 6-3.  The Lady Broncos put up one run in the seventh but could not get any closer falling by the two run margin.
 
Cato scored two runs off two hits, including a homerun, with three RBI's to pace Claflin in Game Two.  Burns had a homerun and one RBI in the win.
 
Norman picked up her second win on the day while German was credited with the save for the Panthers.
 
Claflin will remain on the road as they travel to Raleigh, N.C. to take on the Lady Bears of Shaw University this Wednesday, March 30.  First pitch for the non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Raleigh.
