Claflin Baseball Battles But Falls Short Against Benedict in HBCU Classic

GREENVILLE -- Shomarii Thomas hit a monster two-run homer over the left field wall and added an RBI single to help lead the Benedict College Tigers to a 9-6 victory over Claflin in the Jackie Robinson HBCU Classic at Fluor Field on Friday night.

Benedict improved to 23-11 overall, while Claflin dropped to 17-24. This was a non-conference game.

Benedict took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Thomas cleared the left field wall. Fluor Field is modeled after Boston's Fenway Park and the Greenville Drive is a Class A minor-league affiliate of the Red Sox.

Benedict added four runs in the fifth inning. Skyler Sabado hit a two-out single and advanced to third on a pair of passed balls. Sabado scored on a wild pitch, and David White Jr. followed with a two-run double to right center. Reinaldo Santiago followed with a single up the middle to score White and make it 6-0.

Claflin got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Rashad Bivens.

The Tigers added another run in the top of the seventh. Sabado led off the inning with a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and came home on a single up the middle by Thomas.

The Panthers added two runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to 7-3. Jabari Brown walked and later scored on a wild pitch. Reginald Rogers singled and scored on a double by Bivens.

The Tigers added two runs in the eighth to increase the lead to 9-3. Jerome Holes reached on an error and later scored on a single by Jorge Moreno. Another Claflin error allowed Andrew McCoy to score to make it 9-3.

The Panthers cut the lead to 9-6 with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Three walks loaded the bases and Rashad Hilton came home on a wild pitch. Bivens hit a two-out single to right field to bring home two more runs.

Robert Troiana III, the second of nine Benedict pitchers, earned the win. Yaniel Delgado picked up the save. Claflin starter Wendell Ferguson took the loss.

The Panthers will travel to Albany, Ga. to take on Albany State in a Pivotal three-game conference series.
