Claflin Softball Defeats Albany State in Extra Innings

Lady Panthers Capture East Division of the SIAC

Albany, Ga.—The Claflin University softball team defeated Albany State, 7-6, in extra innings, in their final regular season and final Southern Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (SIAC) Divisional contest of the season.  The win secures the East Division of the SIAC and affords the Lady Panthers the #1 seed heading into the SIAC Softball Championships next week.
 
With the win Claflin finishes the regular season with 31-20 overall record and 18-4 in the SIAC.  Albany State falls to 17-33 and 13-5 in the SIAC.  The Lady Rams will close out its regular season in Augusta, Ga. versus Paine College.
 
LaKaylin Lee went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI's and Chelsea Hall had three hits with one run to pace the Lady Panthers in the win.  Shaquailla German had two hits with one run for Claflin in the win.
 
Tiaria Norman picked up her 12 win of the season on the mound.
 
Albany State was led by Zorria Mann with two runs off two hits. Tiffany Mass was the losing pitcher for Albany State.
 
Claflin opened the scoring in the game, putting up two runs in the top of the first.  Albany State scored its first run in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to one, 2-1.  The Lady Panthers scored an additional run in the top of the third to push the lead back to two, 3-1.
 
Albany State offensive picked up in the bottom of the third, as they scored four runs off three hits and one Lady Panther error to take a two run advantage, 5-3.
 
Claflin scored one run in the top of the fourth and with one out in the top of the fifth, Kayla Cato hit a homerun to left field to tie the game at 5-all.  The Lady Panthers placed its next two batters on the base but could not get any across.
 
The game became a pitcher's duel as neither team could score a run in the sixth or seventh inning, thus forcing extra innings.
 
The Lady Panthers put its first two batters on base via hit in the top of the eighth.  A pass ball allowed both runners to advance.  An RBI single by LaKaylin Lee allowed Kaela Robinson to score to break the 5-5 tie.  Lee consequently scored on a pass ball to give the Lady Panthers a two run advantage, 7-5, heading into the bottom of the eighth. 
 
Albany State managed to get one run across in the bottom of the eighth, but Claflin defense remained solid holding the Lady Rams to just the one run en route to the one run victory.
