Claflin Falls to Kentucky State in the Opening Round of the SIAC Softball Tournament

Hampton, Ga.—Claflin fell to Kentucky State, 7-3, in the opening round of the 2016 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) softball tournament.  The tournament, which is being contested at the Lovejoy Softball Complex in Hampton, Ga., will run thru Saturday, Apr. 30.
 
The loss pushes Claflin (30-21) to loser's bracket where they will face Benedict College, tomorrow, Apr. 29, at 10 a.m. in the elimination game.
 
Freshman LaKaylin Lee paced Claflin in the contest as she scored one run with two hits and two RBI's.  Tiaria Norman and Nyesha Arnold each crossed the plate once for the other two Lady Panthers runs.
 
Norman was the losing pitcher of record.
 
Kentucky State (15-20) was led by Alysha Sakamura who scored three runs with one hit and Jacki Zubiate added two runs with one hit and one RBI.  Cheyenne Carpenter was the winning pitcher for Kentucky State.
 
After scoring one run in the opening frame, Kentucky State put up four runs off one hit but more importantly three Lady Panthers errors in the top of the third to open up a 5-0 lead.
 
After both teams went scoreless in the fourth, Claflin offense picked up.  The Lady Panthers scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to two runs, 5-3.  The Thorobreds remained poised scoring two additional runs in the top of the sixth to push its lead to four.
 
Neither team crossed the plate in the final inning.
 
Should the Claflin advance, they will face the loser of the Stillman/Tuskegee matchup at 2 p.m. on Friday.
 
Game Note:  Prior to the game, the 2016 SIAC All-Conference awards were presented.
