Claflin Softball Advance to Championship Day with Win Over Albany State

Hampton, Ga.—The path to championship day was not easy one for the Claflin University Lady Panthers softball team, but a 6-4 come from behind win over Albany State in the elimination game has afforded them a chance to compete on the final day of competition of the 2016 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) tournament.  The tournament is being contested at the Lovejoy Softball Complex in Hampton, Ga.
 
The win over Albany State was the third of the day for Claflin who improves to 33-21 on the season.
 
Albany State jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the bottom of the first inning.  After neither team scored in the second, LaKaylin Lee led off Claflin third inning with a single up the middle. After advancing to third, Lee scored on a passed ball to cut the deficit to one.
 
Jasmine Squirewell reached base on a walk and with two out and one on, Kayla Cato hit a homerun to dead-away center to tie the game at 3-all in the third.
 
Albany State scored one run off one hit and one Lady Panther error in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead 4-3.
 
With one on and one out in the top of the sixth, Nyesha Arnold hit an RBI single up the middle to score Courtney Burns and tie the game once again, 4-all.  Chelise Morman came off the bench in the top of the sixth to hit a two-run homerun to put the Claflin up for good, 6-4, heading into the final inning.  The Lady Panthers held the Golden Rams scoreless over the final two innings en route to the two-run victory.
 
Tiaria Norman picked up the win in the contest.
 
"I am really proud of the way the ladies played with determination and heart," said head coach Matisse Lee.  "To play three games in 80+ degree heat is no easy task, but they never gave up, even when they fell behind."
 
Earlier in the day, Claflin escaped elimination by defeating Benedict 9-3 and Stillman 6-4.
 
In their first game of the day, Jamelah Thomas had four of the Lady Panthers 15 hits en route to eliminating Benedict.  LaKaylin Lee, the winning pitcher in games one and two, had two runs with two hits and 1 RBI in the win.
 
Claflin scored seven runs in the top of the second to take a commanding lead.  Benedict scored two runs in the second and one in the third to cut the lead to four, 7-3.  The Lady Panthers scored one run in the fifth and one in the seventh en route to its nine runs.
 
Stillman put up two runs in the top of the first to start off the scoring in the Lady Panthers second game on the day.
 
After Lee led off Claflin half of the first with a walk, the Lady Tigers got the next two Lady Panthers out.  With one on and two outs, Shaquailla German had a RBI single to bring in Lee and cut the lead to one, 2-1 after the opening inning.
 
There was no scoring over the next three innings.  Stillman broke the scoring drought as they scored one run off two hits and one Claflin error in the top of the fifth to push its lead back to two, 3-1, but the Lady Panthers remained poised.
 
Jasmine Squirewell scored Claflin second run off an RBI single by Cato in the bottom of the fifth to cut back to one, 3-2.  With bases loaded and two outs, Morman stepped to the plate and hit a two RBI single to give the Lady Panthers the 4-3 lead after five.
 
Stillman tied the game at 4-all in the top of the sixth, but Claflin broke the tie scoring two runs in its half of the sixth for the 6-4 advantage.  The Lady Panthers held the Lady Tigers scoreless in the seventh en route to the two run win.
 
Lee and Jasmine Squirewell scored two runs apiece for Claflin in the win.  Shaquailla German went 3-for-4 with one run and two RBI's in the contest.  Collectively, the Lady Panthers 11 runs with five RBI's in the game.
 
Claflin will face Miles College tomorrow, Saturday, Apr. 30, in the elimination (third place) game.  First pitch is set for 11 a.m.  Should the Lady Panthers advance, they will face Tuskegee in the Championship Game at 1 p.m.  Claflin will have to defeat Tuskegee twice to win the
