Claflin Defeats Young Harris in Homecoming Game

Orangeburg, S.C. -- The Claflin University Panthers picked up their sixth straight homecoming victory, defeating Young Harris 76-64 Saturday at the Tullis Arena on the Claflin campus.
 
With the win, Claflin improved to 2-1 on the season, while Young Harris dropped to 1-3, losing to its second straight the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team. Young Harris fell to Clark Atlanta last week.
 
Benjamin "Tre" Williams led a trio of Panthers in double figures with 18 points, 13 coming in the first half. In that half, "Tre" Williams missed only one shot in seven attempts. He also dished out a game-high five assists.
 
Jaleel Charles and Danny Brown were the other double-figure scorers for Claflin with 14 points each.
 
Charles also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds with five blocked shots.
 
For the game, the Panthers defense recorded 10 blocked shots.
 
Triston Thompson added nine points for Claflin, while Tyler Thompson came off the bench to handout four assists.
 
Antonio Wade was the top scorer for Young Harris with 17 points, followed by Ben Waterhouse with 12 points.
 
In the second half, Claflin increased a 36-31 halftime lead to 49-38 in the first five minutes by outscoring Young Harris 13-7.
 
A three-pointer from Wade, with 11:18 left, pulled Young Harris to within two, 53-51. The basket capped off a 13-4 run by Young Harris.
 
The Panthers quickly gained some breathing room, thanks to "Tre" Williams, who scored the next four points, giving Claflin a 57-51 lead with 10:44 left.
 
From that point, the Panthers outscored Young Harris 19-11 the rest of the way.
 
In the first half, it was all Claflin in the early going, as the Panthers came out of the gate on fire, scoring the game's first eight points. The offensive production saw four of the five Claflin starters score.
 
Young Harris hit the scoreboard at the 17-minute mark on a three-point basket, reducing the Panthers lead to 8-3.
 
The Panthers responded with a 14-5 run, lifting their lead to 22-8 with 12:20 remaining.
 
Claflin held a double-digit lead until Young Harris closed the gap to two, 26-24, with 6:02 left in the half.
 
Albert "Trey" Miller came off the bench to hit a three-pointer on Claflin's next possession down the floor. Miller's basket gave Panthers a 29-24 with 5:52 left.
 
Young Harris once again cut Claflin lead to a bucket, 31-29, with 2:42 on the clock as the result of a 5-2 run.
 
"Tre" Williams provided Claflin some cushion, scoring five of the last seven points of the half for a 36-31 lead at intermission.
 
Claflin will return to action on the road Monday (Nov. 20) at Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) member Saint Augustine's University in Raleigh, North Carolina.  It will be the first of seven straight road games for the Panthers.
