Claflin Women Fall to Virginia State on the Road

Ettrick, Va. – Ashley Fields scored 20 points and pulled in seven rebounds with two steals as the Claflin University women's basketball team fell to Virginia State University, 59-43, in a non-conference road game. 
 
With the loss, the Lady Panthers falls to 1-2 on the short season.  Virginia State improves to 3-0.
 
The contest was the first of six straight road games for the Lady Panthers who will face Virginia Union on Wednesday, Nov. 22 in Richmond, Va.  Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
 
Jhanice Stokes was the only other Claflin player to score in double-figures with 10 points.  Stokes pulled in a team-high eight rebounds.
 
Dominique Williams added seven points and four rebounds in the loss.
 
Virginia State was led by Mia Fitts who scored a game-high 17 points.  The Lady Trojans had three players to recorded double-digit points as Keyana Brown dropped in 13 and Alexis Smith contributed 10.
 
Chrisanna Green pulled in a game-high 13 rebounds and Endia McKinney pulled in six for the Virginia State in the win.
 
Collectively, Claflin shot 27.8 percent from the field and 64.7 percent from the charity stripe while Virginia State shot 38 percent from the field and 84.6 percent (11-of-13) from the free-throw line.
 
After its contest with Virginia Union, the Lady Panthers will travel to Jackson, Tenn. Saturday (Nov. 25) to open Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) play at Lane College.
