Claflin Lady Panthers Open SIAC Play with a Win

Jackson, Tenn. -- The Lady Panthers of Claflin University presented Coach Revonda Whitley with her first Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) win, downing winless Lane College, 59-38, Saturday at the JF Gymnasium in Jackson, Tenn.
 
With the road win, Claflin snapped a two-game losing streak, improving to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the SIAC.
 
The Lady Panthers will continue their conference road trip, taking on LeMoyne-Owen College on Monday in Memphis, Tenn.
 
Dominique Williams paced three Claflin players in double-figures with 15 points. She was 8-of11 from the field including a three-point basket.
 
Joy Okeke scored 13 points for the Lady Panthers, while Ashley Fields added 10 points and team-high seven rebounds.
 
Jhanice Stokes added seven points and six rebounds for Claflin in the win.
 
The Lady Panthers outrebounded Lane by one, 32-31, and scored 17 points off turnovers.
 
Kristy Armwood was the lone double-figure scorer for Lane, now 0-5 and 0-1 in the SIAC, with 10 points and eight rebounds.
 
Alisha Fortenberry and LaKeiya Lane with seven points each.
 
Both teams shot below the 50% mark from the field as Claflin was 25-of-58 (43.1%), while Lane hit just 15-of 48 shots (31.3%).
 
In the first half, Claflin racked up 25 points as compared to just 12 points for Lane for the 13 point lead at the half, 25-12.
 
In the third quarter, Lane outscored Claflin 16-13 to trail 38-28. The Lady Panthers offense got back on track in the fourth quarter, outscoring Lane 21-10.
