Montevallo, Ala. --
Tatyanna Hollins led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points as the Claflin University Lady Panthers defeated the University of Montevallo (Ala.), 64-58, in a non-conference basketball game Monday.
With the win, Claflin lifted its season record to 6-5 heading into Wednesday (Dec. 13) matchup against Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C.
The contest gets underway at 5:30 p.m. at the Timken Center on the Limestone Campus and will be followed by the Claflin-Limestone men's contest.
This will be the Lady Panthers first visit to Gaffney since the 1993-94 season, a span of almost 24 years.
The two teams did meet last season in Orangeburg with Limestone pulling out a 53-49 win.
Limestone, a member of the Conference Carolinas, is 6-2 on the season.
In the win over the University of Montevallo, the Lady Panthers finished with three additional players in double-figures with
Dominique Williams and
Ashley Fields each posting double-doubles. Williams scored 14 points and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds, while Fields contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds along with four assists.
Jhanice Stokes rounded out the double-digit scoring for Claflin with 10 points and three blocked shots.
The University of Montevallo, now 2-8 for the season, was led by Nautika Philpot with a game-high 18 points followed Kiya Sain at 11 points.
In the contest, the Falcons outscored the Lady Panthers in just one of the four quarters, the first at 19-15.
Although Claflin edged out the University of Montevallo 14-13 in the second quarter, the Lady Panthers still trailed 32-29 at the half.
In the third quarter, Stokes broke a 41-41 tie on a layup with 41 seconds left in the period, giving Claflin the lead at 43-41. Williams followed with a basket with six seconds remaining in the quarter giving Claflin the four-point lead heading into the final period, 45-41.
In the fourth quarter, the Falcons managed to tie the contest at 57-57 with 39 seconds left by outscoring the Lady Panthers 16-12.
Claflin halted any comeback by the University of Montevallo by scoring seven of the game's last eight points, five coming from the free throw line.
