Charles, Williams Leads Claflin Past Fort Valley State University

Fort Valley, Ga. -- Jaleel Charles scored 19 points and Benjamin "Tre" Williams added 18 as the Claflin University Panthers racked up their seventh straight win, defeating Fort Valley State University (FVSU), 65-53, in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division game Saturday.
 
The win kept Claflin perfect in the SIAC at 4-0 and improved its overall record to 8-1.
 
Other top scorers for Claflin included Triston Thompson with nine points followed by Timothy Christian II with eight.
 
FVSU, which dropped to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in the SIAC, was led by Tyler Edwards with a game-high 20 points.
 
The Panthers won the battle on the boards, outrebounding the Wildcats 47-31.  Charles, who recorded his second straight double-double and fourth overall, led Claflin with 11 rebounds, while "Tre" Williams added seven rebounds along with five assists.
 
In the field goal department, the Panthers were 23-of-52 (44.2%), while FVSU was 16-of-55 (29.1%).
Claflin had six three-point baskets with "Tre" Williams connecting on 3-of-5.
 
The Panthers started the second half with a 9-0 run after leading 34-29 at the intermission. The run propelled Claflin to a 43-29 lead with 16:31 left in the game.
 
Edwards ended the Panthers run with a basket at the 16:06 mark.
 
Over the next eight minutes, Claflin would hold an 18-point on four different occasion, the last being 56-38 with 8:45 left.
 
The Wildcats would close the gap to 10 points, 61-51, with 1:38 on the strength of a 13-5 run. The Wildcats could get no closer the rest of the way.
 
In the first half, Thompson broke a 10-10 tie by drilling a three-pointer to give the Panthers a 13-10 lead at the 14:39 mark.
 
The contest would remain close over the next 11 minutes with two ties, the last being 27-27 at the 3:00 mark.
 
Claflin closed out the half scoring seven of the last nine points to lead 34-29 at the half.
 
Claflin will continue its road trip, traveling Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) member Winston-Salem University on Monday (Dec.4).
