Claflin Falls to Morehouse 87-84 in Overtime

Orangeburg, S.C.—Morehouse College outscored Claflin University 12-9 in the overtime en route to defeating the Panthers, 87-84, in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) men's basketball game Monday at the Tullis Arena.
 
With the home loss, Claflin dropped to 9-3 in the Eastern Division and 14-6 overall.  The loss also snaps a three-game SIAC win streak for the Panthers.
 
Jaleel Charles came off the bench to lead Claflin in scoring with 15 points, while adding seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Ryan McNeill-Moses also had outstanding all-round performance for the Panthers with 14 points, a team-high eight rebounds and four blocked shots.
 
Austin Lawton and Triston Thompson contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively. Thompson recorded his first double-double of the season dishing out a career-high 11 assists.
 
Morehouse, 12-8 overall and 6-6 in divisional play, was led by Tyrius Walker with a game-high 21 points. Jordan Wallace added 18 points and Michael Olmert contributed 15 for Morehouse.  Omar Alston had a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds while Martravious Little closed out the double-digit scorers for the Maroon Tigers with 10.
 
The contest was tied three times in overtime, the last being 81-81 with 1:44 left.
 
Michael Olmert knocked in a short-range jumper with 30 seconds left on the clock to give  Morehouse the lead for good at 85-83.
 
In the closing seconds, the Panthers missed two opportunities at tying the game. The first came with 6.2 seconds left as Lawton was fouled in the act of shooting. He made one of two free throws, leaving Claflin behind at 85-84.
 
The second attempt came of an Albert Miller three-pointer that hit the front of the rim as time expired.
 
After trailing by one point heading into intermission, Claflin outscored Morehouse 35-34, in the second half.  Down by two in the closing seconds of regulation, Alston drained a jumper for the Maroon Tigers just as time expired, sending the contest into overtime at 75-75.
 
In the first half, Claflin held the lead until the 10:57 mark when Jordan tied the game at 18-18 of a three-pointer. He later hit another three-pointer, giving Morehouse a 21-18 lead at the 10:34 mark. The basket ignited a 14-6 Morehouse run that ended with a 35-24 Maroon Tigers lead with 5:40 remaining in the first half.
 
The Panthers turned up the heat with a full-court press, resulting in 10 of the next 15 points. The run pulled Claflin to within 40-36 with 1:30 showing on the clock.
Charles, who had 11 points in the first half, supplied the big offensive punch during the surge, a three-point play.
 
The Panthers eventually pulled within a point, 41-40, at the half scoring four of the last five points.
 
Claflin will take to the road for two games, starting Thursday (Feb. 9) at SIAC divisional foe Paine College. The Panthers will close out the road trip against Francis Marion (Feb. 13).
