Francis Marion Defeats Claflin for the Third Time This Season

Orangeburg, S.C.--The Claflin University baseball team came up short for the third time against Francis Marion, dropping a 10-4 non-conference decision Wednesday (Apr. 19) at Historic Mirmow Field.
 
The loss drops the Panthers to 12-28 overall.
 
The Patriots improve to 29-17 on the season.
 
Elliott Melton scored two runs coupled with two hits to lead the Panthers.
 
Johnathan Parnell, II had one run with a hit and Darrell Langston contributed one run, a hit and two RBIs in the loss.
 
Reese Cooley had four hits with one run and two RBIs to pace the Patriots.
 
Trey Chapman and Zach Callahan contributed three hits and one run apiece in the win.
 
Francis Marion came out the gate quickly scoring two runs in the top of the first.
 
Claflin got one run back in the bottom of the first and took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second off a two-run RBI single from Langston.
 
The Patriots scored two runs in the top of the fourth to regain the lead, 4-3, but the Panthers tied the score at 4-all in their half of the inning.
 
The score would remain tied until the top of the eighth when Callahan hit a two-run homer to give Francis Marion the two run lead.
 
The Patriots tacked on two more runs in the inning to an 8-4 advantage.
 
Francis Marion carried the momentum into the final inning, scoring two additional runs in the top of the ninth while holding Claflin scoreless over the last five innings en route to the six run victory.
 
Garrett Wilson pitched two solid innings to pick up the win for the Patriots. 
 
Aaron Perry, who went seven and one-third innings, was credited with the loss.
 
Claflin will host Benedict this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Apr. 22-23, in a pivotal Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) match-up.
 
Saturday double-header is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch while Sunday single game will also have a 1 p.m. start.
 
The Panthers will hold a ring ceremony between games one and two on Saturday to honor the 2016 SIAC Conference Champs.  Sunday will be senior day senior day activities taking place before the game at approximately 12:30 p.m.  Seniors from baseball and track & field will be honored during the ceremony.
