Claflin Closeout Non-conference Play with a Loss at Augusta

Augusta, Ga. – The Claflin University baseball team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 10-4 loss to Augusta University, Wednesday at Lake Olmstead Stadium in Augusta.

The loss drops the Panthers to 14-30 on the season. The Jaguars improve to 20-24.

Claflin got on the board in the top of the first when a ground out to the short stop by Lyndale Morley scored Darrell Langston, who reached base via a single earlier in the inning.

The Panthers tacked on one additional run in the top of the second to take a 2-0 lead but Augusta rebounded quickly in its half of the second.

The Jaguars scored three runs off two hits to take a 3-2 lead.

After Langston singled to start the third, the Panthers placed its next two batters on base via a single and a fielder's choice.  Rashad Bivens scored Claflin third run of the game off an RBI walk from Jeturi Brown.

That would be all the scoring for the Panthers over the next four innings while Augusta's offensive intensity increased.

The Jaguars scored the next seven runs, three in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in each of the sixth and seventh.

Harold Smith hit a two-out single down the left field line and Rashad Webster followed with a walk which put Smith in scoring position.

Elliott Melton hit a single down the right field line which scored Smith to break the Claflin drought.

The Panthers defense held solid in the bottom of the eighth.

Claflin placed its second batter on the base pads in the top of the ninth but could not score a run thus falling by the six run margin.

The Panthers will close out their 2017 season on the road in Memphis, Tenn., this weekend, Friday and Saturday, Apr. 28 and 29, when they face Lane College in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) three-game series.
