Claflin Fall to West Georgia in Collegiate Softball Doubleheader

Carrollton, Ga.—The Claflin University softball team dropped its final non-conference doubleheader Wednesday (Apr. 26), falling to the University of West Georgia (UWG) 11-1 and 10-2, in Carrollton, Ga.
 
This was the first-ever meeting between Claflin and UWG who plays in the Gulf South Conference.
 
The losses drops the Lady Panthers to 28-18 overall.  The Wolves improves to 27-22 on the season.
 
Claflin defense held strong over the first three innings of game one allowing just one run heading to the fourth.
 
Sophomore LaKaylin Lee reached on a single to the pitcher and then scored off a RBI double by Chelise Morman to tie the game at 1-all in the top of the fourth.
 
The Wolves had a breakout inning in the bottom of the fourth using five hits and one Lady Panther error to put 10 runs on the board.
 
Claflin could not score in the top of the fifth.
 
Tiaria Norman was the losing pitcher in game one and Lindsye Jefferson was the winning pitcher of record.
 
UWG scored two runs in the each of the first and second innings and four in the fourth to jump out to an 8-0 run after four complete.
 
Senior Chelsea Hall homered to left center in the top of the fifth to get the Lady Panthers on the board.
 
After the Lady Panthers defense held the Wolves scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, Norman homered, also to left center, with one out to give Claflin its second run of the game in the top of the sixth.
 
UWG placed its first two batters on base in the bottom of the sixth, a single by Lexie Stohr and a double by Peyton Stallworth.
 
Ally Hindman hit a two-run RBI double to left field to end the game with the eight run advantage.
 
Nyesha Arnold went five innings and faced three batters in the sixth in the loss while Adriana Durden pitched six innings en route to the win.
 
Claflin will close out its regular season this Saturday, Apr. 29, with a single game versus Albany State.  This will be the battle for the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Eastern Division Title.  It will also be senior day for the Lady Panthers.
 
First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at the Adden Street Field in Orangeburg.
