Claflin Softball Wins the SIAC Eastern Division with a Win Over Albany State

Lady Panthers Honor Seniors in Pre-game Ceremony

Orangeburg, S.C. – Claflin University softball team scored runs in the first two innings en route to defeating Albany State, 6-1, to capture the 2017 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Eastern Division for the third time in four seasons.
 
With the win, the Lady Panthers earn the No. 1 seed in the East and will face Tuskegee University, the No. 4 seed in the SIAC West Division in their opening game of the 2017 SIAC Championships.
 
The championships will begin on Thursday, May 4 and will run thru Saturday, May 6 at Diamond Lakes Regional Park in Hephzibah, Ga.
 
Claflin (2-18, 17-2 SIAC) scored two runs in the first and four in the second to take the 6-0 advantage. 
 
The score remained the same until Toni Coleman scored off a wild pitch in the top of the fourth for Albany State's (23-21, 17-3 SIAC) only run of the game.
 
Sophomore LaKaylin Lee went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs to lead Claflin.
 
Kayla Cato had one hit, her ninth homerun of the season, with two runs and three RBIs.
 
Chelsea Hall and Chelise Morman also scored runs for the Lady Panthers in the win.
 
Coleman, Jade Williams, and Brianna Murillo accounted for the three hits from Albany State.
 
Tiaria Norman who went all seven innings was the winning pitcher of record and Tiffany Massey was the losing pitcher of note for Albany State.
 
First pitch for the Claflin-Tuskegee tournament game is set for 2 pm. The championships are free and open to the public.
 
Game Note: Nyesha Arnold, Kayla Sanderson, and Chelsea Hall were the three senior members honored in a ceremony prior to the contest.
