Claflin Softball Completes Season Sweep over Benedict

Orangeburg, S.C.—For the second straight season, the Claflin University softball team has swept Benedict, winning the final game of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) series 11-6, Sunday in Orangeburg.
 
The win is the seventh in eight games for Claflin who improve to 24-15 overall and 13-2 in the SIAC.
 
Benedict falls to 22-19 overall and 11-8 in the SIAC.
 
The Lady Tigers scored one run in the first and two in the third to jump out to a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth.
 
Claflin scored four runs off two hits and one Benedict error to take the 4-3 advantage.
 
In the inning, Chelise Morman hit a two-run homer.
 
Benedict tied the game in the top of the fifth, but the Lady Panthers bats got hot.
 
Claflin scored six straight runs before committing and out and an additional run with two outs to bust the game open.
 
The Lady Panthers used the seven run inning to jump ahead 11-4 after five complete.
 
The Lady Tigers scored two runs in the top of the seventh but Claflin defense remained poised en route to the five run victory.
 
Chelsea Hall, Lee and Morman all scored two runs in the win.
 
Morman finished the game with three hits and three RBIs.
 
Brianna Billie and Khayreyah Parrish scored two runs apiece to Benedict.
 
Shaquailla German was the winning pitcher while Tiaria Norman picked up the save.
 
Shanessa Rees was the losing pitcher of record.
 
Claflin will return home next weekend, Friday and Saturday, Apr. 14 and 15, when they host Paine College in a SIAC three-game series.
Friday's contest gets underway at 4 p.m. while Saturday's doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
 
Saturday's contest is designated as Senior Day for the Lady Panthers with senior activities taking place before the game.
