Fields Leads Lady Panthers Past Paine 65-44

Orangeburg, S.C. – Ashley Fields came off the bench to post her fourth double-double of season, 16 points-10 rebounds, as the Claflin University Lady Panthers defeated Paine College, 65-44, in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) basketball game Saturday the Tullis Arena.  Fields also ended the game with four assists with five steals for in the Lady Panthers.
 
Claflin, winner of its last four, improved to 8-2 in the SIAC and moved into first place in the East Division, surpassing Clark Atlanta University who loss to Albany State University, 77-51, on Saturday. The road loss dropped Clark Atlanta to 7-2 in the SIAC.
 
Claflin is now 11-7 overall.
 
The Lady Panthers will take a break from league action, taking on Elizabeth City State University of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association on Wednesday (Jan.17).
 
After the non-conference meeting, Claflin will visit Clark Atlanta on Jan 22 for a key divisional matchup.
 
Dominique Williams hit the double-figure mark for Claflin with 15 points, of which 11 came in the second half. She also hauled down nine rebounds with five steals and a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line.
 
Joy Okeke rounded out double-digit scoring the Lady Panthers13 with points that included a pair of three-pointers.
 
For the game, Claflin was 17-of-22 from the free throw line and outrebounded Paine 47-38 with 17 coming on the offensive end.
 
Paine, winless on the season at 0-13 and 0-8 in the SIAC, was led by Keondra Archie and Zhané Green with 13 points each. Archie also added a game-high 13 rebounds.
 
The contest was a tale of two halves; one where Claflin struggled in the early going and the other, a defensive show.
 
In the first half, especially the opening quarter, the Lady Panthers could not get it into gear as Paine scored the game's first five points, all coming from Green.
 
Claflin pulled even at 7-7 with 5:49 showing on the clock, but Paine outscored the Lady Panthers 9-2 the rest of the quarter for a 16-9 lead. In the quarter, Claflin shot 15.4% from the field, but was successful at the charity stripe in four attempts.
 
In the second quarter, the contest was tied for the last time at 19-19 before the Lady Panthers erupted with a 12-3 run for a 31-22 advantage with 1:30 left in the quarter.
 
Paine managed to cut the Claflin lead to four, 33-29, at the intermission.
Then in the second half, the Claflin defense turned up the pressure, holding the Lady Lions to 15 points and forcing 15 turnovers. The Lady Panthers also had 10 steals finishing the game with 17.
 
After leading 33-29 at the half, Claflin held Paine to just six points in the third quarter, while scoring 12, to lead by 10 points heading into the final quarter of play at 45-35.
 
The fourth quarter saw the Lady Panthers outscored Paine 20-9.
