Stokes Leads Lady Panthers Past Fort Valley State University

Orangeburg, S.C. -- Jhanice Stokes came off the bench to produce a double-double,19 points-13 rebounds, as Claflin University cruised past Fort Valley State University (FVSU), 72-52, in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division women's basketball game Saturday at the Tullis Arena.
 
The win, Claflin sixth in the last seven games, improved the Lady Panthers season worksheet to 13-8 overall and 9-3 in the SIAC. The win also provided Claflin with the regular season sweep of FVSU. The Lady Panthers won the first meeting 63-61 in overtime.
 
Stokes also finished the game with three blocked shots, giving her a team-high 47 for the season.
 
Ashley Fields also came off the bench to score 13 points while dishing out a game-high six assists for Claflin.
 
Dominique Williams rounded out double-digit scoring for the Lady Panthers with 10 points.
 
Deja Dickens had eight points for Claflin, while Carmen Robinson pulled down eight rebounds.
 
FVSU, now 3-19 and 3-10, was led by Nola Carter and Alicia Franklin with 14 points each.
 
The Lady Panthers broke open a close contest with a 10-2 run to start the second quarter. The offensive explosion increased a 15-13 first quarter lead by Claflin to 25-15 with 8:01 left in the half.  Fields led the charge for the Lady Panthers with four points, while Dickens and Joy Okeke contributed three points each during the run.
 
Claflin would maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the quarter, outscoring FVSU 16-9 over the last eight minutes for a 41-24 advantages at the half.
 
Defense also played a significant role for Claflin 17-point lead at the intermission as the Lady Panthers forced 19 turnovers, resulting in 15 points.  For the game, the Claflin defense forced 35 FVSU miscues, the most for the Lady Panthers since they produced 25 against Livingstone College (Nov. 15, 2017).
 
Claflin barely won the third period, outscoring FVSU by just five points, 17-12, to push the lead to 19 points, 58-39 heading into the final quarter.
 
In the fourth quarter, Claflin outscored FVSU 14-13 for the final margin of victory.
 
The Lady Panthers will continue their homestand on Monday (Jan. 29) against Albany State University at 5:30 p.m. The contest will be a part of Military/ROTC Night.  Military personnel in uniform or with a valid ID and visiting ROTC students in uniform will be admitted for a special price.  Tickets must be purchased at the ticket window to receive the special price.
