Lady Panthers Drop Second Straight Game

Orangeburg, S.C. -- The Claflin University Lady Panthers suffered their second straight setback, falling to Virginia Union University for the second time this season, 68-50, in a non-conference basketball game Wednesday at the Tullis Arena.
 
With the defeat, Claflin dropped to 13-10 for the season. The loss was just the Lady Panthers second at home this season in nine decisions.
 
Dominique Williams led Claflin in scoring with 16 points. For the season, Williams has scored in double-figures 18 of the Lady Panthers 23 games. She also shared team-high in rebounds with Jhanice Stokes at eight.
 
Carmen Robinson was the only other Claflin player to hit double-figures with a career-high 12 points.
Ashley Fields came off the bench to score nine points and dished out four assists for the Lady Panthers, while Joy Okeke added eight points.
 
Virginia Union, now 20-1 on the season, was led by Alexis Johnson with a game-high 28 points and 12 rebounds.
 
In the second quarter, Virginia Union used a late scoring surge in gaining the breathing room it needed to defeat Claflin for the second time this season.
 
Leading by just a point at 19-18 with 4:45 left in the second quarter, Virginia Union closed the period with a 13-5 run to lead to 32-23 halftime lead.
 
In the third quarter, Virginia Union extended its lead to double-digits by outscoring Claflin 17-12 to lead 59-35 heading into the final period.
 
In the fourth quarter, Virginia Union posted its biggest lead of the game at 62-43 with 3:46 left.
 
Claflin outscored Virginia Union 7-6 in the final minutes.
 
In the first quarter, the contest was tied at 6-6 at the 5:28 mark. The contest remained that way until Alexis Johnson gave Virginia Union the lead for good at 8-6 with 1:28 left in the quarter.
 
 Virginia Union would go on to score five of the last seven points of the quarter to lead 13-8.
 
The Lady Panthers will return to action Monday (Feb. 5) playing host to Clark Atlanta University in a key Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division. It will be Greek Night Part 2 on the campus of Claflin.
