Lady Panthers Defeat Saint Augustine’s in Overtime, Pick up First-Ever CIAA Win

Orangeburg, S.C. – The Claflin University women's basketball team made a successful debut in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) on Monday (Nov. 19), defeating Saint Augustine's University, 72-67, in overtime at Tullis Arena.
 
The extra period victory extended Claflin early season winning streak to three games and improved the Lady Panthers worksheet to 3-2 overall. Claflin is 1-0 in the CIAA.
 
Ashley Fields led Claflin in scoring with a game-high 25 points. The offensive production marked third time this season Fields has scored 20-plus points. She posted a career-high of 29 points against the University of Tampa on Nov. 10.
 
Fields is averaging 18 points over the last four games for Claflin.
 
Two other players hit the double-figure mark for the Lady Panthers as Dashia Jackson dropped in 18 points followed Dionna Long at 14 points.
 
Saint Augustine's (1-3, 0-1 CIAA), was led by Kiana Clark with 16 points.  Kamya Renwicks added 13 points in the loss.
 
In the overtime period, Claflin outscored Saint Augustine's 11-6 en route to its third straight home win.
 
Carmen Robinson provided the Lady Panthers with the lead for good, completing a traditional three-point play with 2:17 remaining to break a 65-65 tie giving Claflin the 68-65 advantage. 
 
Robinson had five points in the extra period.
 
Jackson pushed the Lady Panthers lead to 70-65 of an inside basket with 2:03 left.
 
Both teams scored two points in the closing minute for the final score.
 
In regulation, Claflin outscored Saint Augustine's 49-38 in the first three quarters. The Lady Panthers held a 16-point cushion (54-38) with 6:02 left in the game, but the Falcons outscored the home team 23-7 the rest of the way.
 
Clark connected on a three-pointer with 8.6 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.  The score was tied at 61-all after four quarters.
 
The Lady Panthers will continue CIAA play, this Saturday, Nov. 24, when they travel to Raleigh, NC to take on Shaw University.
