Claflin Lady Panthers Seeks Fifth Straight Win

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Claflin University women's basketball team will be seeking its fifth straight win Thursday (Nov. 29) when they travel to Virginia State University for a non-conference matchup.
 
The contest is slated for a 6 p.m. tip at the Multipurpose Center on the Virginia State campus.
 
This will be the first of two meetings of the season between the two.  The teams will meet again in little over two weeks in Orangeburg on Dec. 11 in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAA) contest.
 
Claflin will enter the clash with Virginia State at 4-2 overall.
 
Virginia State, also 4-2 on the season, enters the contest as the #8 ranked team in this week D2SIDA Atlantic Region Poll.
 
In the last three meetings since Claflin moved up to the NCAA Division II ranks, Virginia State holds a 2-1 advantage, including a 59-43 win at home last season.
 
Claflin lone win came during the 2012-13 season when the Lady Panthers edged the Trojans 62-61.
 
Claflin will enter the early season matchup averaging 65.0 point in six games and 72.5 points over the last four games.
 
Virginia State is generating an average of 74.5 points per game.
 
Claflin is led offensively by Ashley Fields at 18 points game. Except for scoring two points in the season-opener against Florida Tech, Fields is averaging 21.2 in the last five games. Fields earned her second straight CIAA Player of the Week this week.
 
Other players scoring in double-figures for the Lady Panthers include Dashia Jackson, with 13.0 points, followed by Deja Dickens at 11.3 points and Long with 10.2 points. Jackson was named the CIAA Rookie of the Week for the second straight week.
 
The Trojans host only two double-figure scorers in Chrisanna Green at 15.7 points and Yazmen Hannah with 14 3 points.
 
Claflin and Virginia State have played one common opponent thus far this season, Paine College. The Lady Panthers routed Paine 64-45 in Orangeburg, while the Trojans won their game 88-71.
 
After the encounter with Virginia State, Claflin will return to CIAA action, traveling to Chowan University (Dec. 1) and Elizabeth City State University (Dec. 3).
