Claflin Men’s Basketball Drops 2018-19 Season Opener to Nova Southeastern

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (11-9-18) – The Claflin University men's basketball team dropped its 2018-19 season opener, falling to Nova Southeastern by nine, 101-92, in a non-conference contest in Rick Case Arena on the Nova Southeastern campus.
 
The Panthers, now 0-1, had four players to finish in double-figures led by Cornellius Reynolds with 19 points.  Reynolds also pulled in a game-high nine rebounds.
 
Triston Thompson dropped in 16 points with five rebounds while Jaimik Moore and Alex Brown added 14 points apiece in the loss.
 
Mark Matthews and David Dennis paced Nova Southeastern (1-0) with 23 and 22 points, respectively.  Matthews and Dennis shared the team leading rebounds with nine boards each.
 
Dwayne Gibson contributed 14 points and Eddie Puisis scored nine points with seven rebounds in the win.
 
Despite the loss, Claflin had a balanced outing, shooting 57 percent from the field, 36.8 percent from behind the three-point arc and 68 percent from the charity stripe.
 
The Sharks also had a balanced game, shooting 46.7 percent from the field, 38.5 percent from three-point range and 63.6 percent from the free-throw line.
 
Nova Southeastern outrebounded Claflin 41-35.  Claflin outscored the Sharks in the paint, 48-46, but Nova Southeastern doubled up the Panthers on points-off-turnovers (30-15).
 
The teams played to a 40-40 tie at the half.
 
Claflin will face USC Aiken on the road, Wednesday, Nov. 14, before returning home for its 2018-19 home opener against Tuskegee for Homecoming on Saturday, Nov. 17.
