Fields Hit Buzzer-Beater to Lift Claflin Over Elizabeth City

Elizabeth City, N.C. – Ashley Fields hit a fade-away jumper as time expired to lift the Claflin University Lady Panthers over Elizabeth City State University (ECSU), 47-45, in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association contest Monday (Dec.3) at R.L. Vaughan Center.

The fourth quarter was close throughout with no lead larger than four points, held by Claflin at 45-41 with 3:54 left. ECSU later used a 4-0 run to tie the contest at 45-45 with 1:31 left, setting the stage for Fields game-winning basket.

After a Claflin took a timeout with 10 seconds remaining, Fields rebounded a missed three-point attempt by Deja Dickens to connect on the jumper as time expired.

The game-ending victory marked the second time this season Claflin has won at the buzzer. On Nov. 24, Dionna Long tip-in as time expired gave the Lady Panthers a 77-75 win over Shaw University in Raleigh.

The win also snapped a two-game losing streak for Claflin, as the Lady Panthers improves to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in the CIAA.

Fields was the only player in double-figures for the Lady Panthers with 13 points. She has scored in double-digits in seven of Claflin nine games this season. Fields also pulled down eight rebounds, dished out two assists and recorded three steals in the win.

Dickens scored nine points and added five steals for the Lady Panthers, while Carmen Robinson contributed eight points. Shakarri Mack led Claflin on the boards with nine rebounds.

ECSU, now 4-4 and 0-1 in the CIAA, was led by Devona Stell with 18 points and 16 rebounds.

In the third quarter, ECSU led for the first 8:33. During that span the Lady Vikings held the biggest lead of the quarter, 30-23, at the 7:31 mark.

The Lady Panthers rallied, using a 12-5 run to pull even at 35-35 with 1:27 left in the quarter.

The teams traded baskets in the final seconds for a 37-37 tie after three quarters of play.

The game opened with Claflin jumping out to a 4-1 lead by the 7:41 mark off baskets by Fields and Robinson. The contest was tied twice in the quarter over the next three minutes of play, the last coming at 9-9.  Claflin finished the quarter on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from Dickens, to lead 16-9 after one.

The second quarter was a different story, as Claflin generated only four points while ECSU put up 13 to take the 22-20 lead at the intermission.

In the quarter, the Lady Vikings scored the first eight points to take a 17-16 lead with 2:53 showing on the clock. Claflin would recapture the lead 18-17 on a jumper from Breanna Price with 2:30 left in the quarter but ECSU would outscore the Lady Panthers 5-2 in final two minutes of the quarter to lead 22-20 at the half.

The Lady Panthers will return home, Thursday (Dec. 6), to host Virginia Union University in another CIAA matchup at 5:30 p.m.
