Lady Panthers Hold off Benedict on Senior Day

Orangeburg, S.C. -- Dominique Williams scored 16 points to lead four Lady Panthers in double-figures as Claflin University defeated arch-rival Benedict College 58-55 in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division contest at the Tullis Arena on Saturday.
 
With the win, Claflin is now 14-12 overall and 10-6 in the SIAC. Benedict dropped to 8-16 and 8-8.
 
Following Williams in scoring for the Lady Panthers were Jhanice Stokes and Ashley Fields with double-double performances. Stokes scored 12 points and pulled down and a game-high 16 rebounds, while Fields contributed 12 points and 13 rebounds.  Fields was also three assists shy of a triple double pulling in seven assists in the win.
 
Joy Okeke added 12 points and eight rebounds for Claflin.
 
Benedict was led by Ay'Anna Bey with a game-high 21 points and Mikeisha Moore at 15 points.
 
The contest was back-in-forth in the second half with Benedict holding a 42-40 lead heading into the fourth quarters.
 
In the final quarter of play, the game was tied for the last time at 49-49 with 4:52 left.
 
Williams provided Claflin the lead for good, hitting a pair of free throws with 3:29 left for 51-49 advantage. Deja Dickens later sealed the win for the Lady Panthers, hitting a three-pointer with 54 seconds remaining, giving Claflin a 57-52 lead.
 
The Lady Panthers outs outscored Benedict 9-6 down the stretch.
 
In the first half, Claflin outplayed Benedict on both ends of the courts for a 30-22 lead at the intermission.
 
The Lady Panthers also out rebounded Benedict 31-18 in the opening half and 54-40 for the game.
The Lady Panthers offensive production started in the final four minutes of the first quarter. Claflin outscored Benedict 7-2 over that span to end the quarter ahead at 14-9.
 
Okeke scored eight of her 10 first-half points in the quarter that included a pairs of three-pointers.
 
In the second quarter, Benedict mounted a comeback, closing the gap to 23-22 with just over three minutes left in the period. Claflin quickly push its lead to five-points on a four-point play by Williams, who was fouled on a successful three-point attempt. She hit the free throw as the Lady Panthers led 27-22 with 2:46 showing on the clock.
Claflin scored the last three points of the quarter to lead by eight point (30-22) at the half.
 
The Lady Panthers will close out the regular season Monday (Feb. 19) at Paine College in a divisional game. The contest gets underway at 5:30 p.m. at the Epps Gymnasium on the Paine campus.
 
Claflin won the first meeting this season 65-44 in Orangeburg during a five-game winning streak for the Lady Panthers.
