Okeke Leads Claflin Past Paine in Final Game of the Season

Augusta, Ga. -- Joy Okeke led a balanced scoring attack for the Lady Panthers with 18 points as Claflin University defeat Paine College 74-59 in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) basketball game Monday night.
 
With the win, Claflin finished the regular season with a 15-12 overall record, the same mark as last season.
 
The Lady Panthers also wrapped up the campaign 11-6 in the SIAC, good enough for third place. The 11 wins against league opponents tied the mark posted by the 2015-16 team.
 
Claflin will now prepare for the upcoming SIAC Tournament scheduled for Feb. 26 – Mar 3 in Birmingham, Ala. at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
 
Ashley Fields followed Okeke in the scoring column for the Lady Panthers with a double-double, 15 points and 10 rebounds. She also dished out four assists.
 
Dominique Williams tossed in 12 points along with seven rebounds, four assists and four steals, while Deja Dickens added 11 points.
 
Carmen Robinson had eight rebounds for the Lady Panthers.
 
The Claflin bench contributed 40 of the Lady Panthers 74-point total.
 
Paine was led by Zhané Green and Asia Timmons with 16 and 15 points, respectively.
 
In sweeping the regular-season series for a second straight year from Paine, the Lady Panthers used a 26-9 scoring spree in the fourth quarter to pull out the win.
 
Paine entered the fourth quarter leading by two points at 50-48. Claflin pulled even early in the quarter on a layup Zakera Chadmon that tied the contest at 50-50 with 9:56 left. The basket ignited a 14-0 run by the Lady Panthers, giving Claflin a 64-50 lead with 5:47 left. The Lady Panther finished the game outscoring Paine 10-9 for the final margin of victory.
 
The two teams played to a 15-15 tie at the end of the first quarter. Claflin held a 30-27 advantage at intermission by outscoring Paine 15-12 in the second quarter.
