Bluefield State Holds Off Claflin in Baseball

Orangeburg, S.C. -- Bluefield State College baseball team withstood two late-inning scoring threats by the Claflin en route to defeating the Panthers for the second straight game, 8-7, at Mirmow Field on Saturday.
 
The tough loss, saw Claflin record dropped to 1-12. Claflin will try to avoid the series sweep on Sunday in the third game, which starts at 1 p.m.
 
Bluefield State is now 3-4.
 
The Panthers rally came in the bottom of seventh trailing 8-4. The Panthers scored three runs in the inning, cutting the Bluefield State lead to one at 8-7.  Johnathan Parnell II led the inning off with a double and moved to third on an error by Bluefield State third baseman Cole Blocker off Darrell Langston grounder. With runners on second and third with no outs Grayland Fowler delivered an RBI single to drive home Parnell II.
 
The Panthers second run of the inning came on a sacrifice fly by Jalen Sprull that pushed Langston across home plate. The final run for Claflin was the result of a wild pitch that scored Fowler.
 
The scoring threat ended as Eric McElveen struck for the third out of the inning, leaving the Panthers behind at 8-7 heading into the eighth inning of play.
 
After Bluefield State failed to score in its half of the eighth, the Panthers made some noise in the bottom of the inning. Claflin had the tying runner on third in Clyde Parker with one out. Parker was left stranded as pinch hitter Harold Smith struck out and Langston flied out to deep centerfield, ending the Panthers scoring threat.
 
In the ninth inning, the stage was set for another game-tying opportunity for Claflin. Fowler opened the inning with a line drive single to left off Tanner Brandon, who relieved Kenrick Mendez. Brandon got Craig Hopkins to hit into a double play and struck out Sprull to end the game.
 
The Panthers held a 2-0 lead in the first inning off a two-run homer by Langston, his fourth of the season.
After Bluefield State tied the contest with two runs in the second inning at 2-2, Claflin took its last lead of the game in third on a run-scoring single by Sprull that brought home Langston.
 
Langston, Fowler and Sprull had two hits and 2RBIs each to lead the Panthers.
 
Bluefield State was led by Tanner Ray and Logan Wriston with two-run homers.
 
Austin Stambaugh was the winning pitcher for Bluefield State with Tanner Brandon picking up the save.
 
Eric DuBose took the loss for Claflin.
