Claflin Softball Falls to Tusculum on the Road

Greenville, Tenn.—The Claflin University softball team dropped a non-conference road doubleheader to Tusculum College, falling 13-5 and 11-1 in games one and two, respectively.  With the losses, Claflin remains winless on the season at 0-6.  It was opening day for Tusculum who goes to 2-0.
 
Tusculum bats were hot early as the Pioneers jumped out to a 9-0 lead after two innings, scoring five in the first and four in the second.
 
Claflin managed to find some offense in the top of the third.  After Jamelah Thomas drew a one out walk, LaKaylin Lee singled before Kayla Cato knocked out a triple to bring in Thomas and Lee for the Lady Panthers first runs of the game.
 
Tiaria Norman followed Cato's triple with a RBI single to score Cato and cut the lead to six.
 
Tusculum added four additional runs in the fourth to take a 13-3 lead into the fifth inning.
 
Lee, who had two runs with two hits in the loss, led off the top of the fifth with a triple and scored off a sacrifice fly by Jasmine Squirewell for the Lady Panthers fourth run of the game.
 
With two outs, Tiaria Norman doubled which was followed by a single down the right field line by Chelise Morman that scored Najila Miller, who pinch ran for Norman, for the Claflin final run of the five inning game.
 
LaKaylin Lee was the losing pitcher of record for Claflin.
 
Tusculum bats remained hot in game two as they put up four runs in the second and seven in the fourth for its 11 runs. The Pioneers defense was equally as solid holding Claflin to just three hits without committing an error.
 
The one bright spot for the Panthers was a homerun to leftfield by Morman for Claflin only run of the five inning game.
 
Tiara Norman, was the losing pitcher in game two.
 
Claflin game at Limestone scheduled for Sunday (Feb. 11) has been cancelled due to rain/thunderstorms in the forecast; therefore the Lady Panthers will return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 13 when they host Southern Wesleyan in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Adden Street Field.
