Claflin Goes 2-0 on Opening Day of 2018 SIAC Crossover

Jasper, Ala.—The Claflin University softball team went 2-0 on opening day of the 2018 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Crossover Tournament in Jasper, Ala.
 
 The tournament, which runs through Saturday (March 17), is being contested at Memorial Park in Jasper.
 
Claflin defeated LeMoyne-Owen College (LOC) 33-2 in its opening game and Kentucky State 8-0 in the second game of the day.
 
The Lady Panthers will face Miles College (12:15) and Spring Hill College (4:45 p.m.) on day two of the tournament.  All times are Central Standard Time.
 
Claflin scored in four-of-five innings with 23 hits in game one.  After not scoring in the first inning, the Lady Panthers put up five runs in the second, 11 in the third, four in the fourth and two in the fifth.
 
Deandra Ealey led Claflin at the plate in game one going 4-of-5 with three runs and a RBI.
 
Kayla Cato had two hits, including a homerun, and three runs in the game one win.
 
Natiasha Kent went 2-for-2 and Maya Turner had one run with one hit for LOC.
 
Yemaya Rich was the winning pitcher for the Lady Panthers while Quena Johnson was the losing pitcher for LOC.
 
Claflin bats remained hot in its second game of the day.  The Lady Panthers knocked out 11 hits en route to their eight runs against Kentucky State.  Claflin scored three runs in the first, three in the third and one in each of the fourth and fifth inning.
 
The Lady Panthers eight runs were distributed over eight players.  LaKaylin Lee, Kayla Cato, Jamelah Thomas and Jada Ames each finished the game with two hits and one run.
 
Tiaria Norman and Jasmine Squirewell finished the game with one run and one hit apiece.
 
Kaela Robinson and Kashira Givens scored one run each to close out the runs for Claflin.
 
Adrix Paradizo-Ramos had the lone hit for Kentucky State.
 
Norman was the winning pitcher of record while Paola Flores was the loser for Kentucky State.
