Claflin Come From Behind to Defeat Lane for the SIAC Series Sweep

Orangeburg, S.C. – The Claflin University baseball team came from 10 runs down to defeat Lane 13-12 and complete the series sweep in its 2018 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) opening weekend.
 
With the win, the Panthers improve to 7-18 overall and 3-0 in the SIAC.  Lane remain winless on the season at 0-17 overall and 0-3 in the SIAC.
 
Darrell Langston, the team's leader in hits, hitting percentage and homeruns, finished the game 2-for-2 with four runs, three walks and a RBI.
 
Grayland Fowler went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs and Jalen Sprull closed out the multi-hitters going 2-for-4, including a double, with one run, a walk and a RBI.
 
Clyde Parker had one hit with two walks and one RBI while Tavion Towers finished with two walks, a run and a RBI.
 
Lane was led by Keishaun Clark who went 4-for-6 with three runs and two RBIs. 
 
Deshaun Cole had three hits with two runs and two RBIs and Treviz Brown finished with two hits, three runs and two RBIs for the Dragons in the loss.
 
Lane took command of the game early jumping out to a 4-0 lead by the middle of third, scoring one in the second and three in the third.
 
Claflin scored two runs to close the deficit in the bottom of the third.
 
Jonathan Parnell led off the inning with a single followed by a triple from Langston to score Parnell for Claflin first run of the game.
 
A sacrifice fly by Parker drove in Langston for the Panthers second run in the inning.
 
The Dragons then used five hits to erupt for five runs for a 9-2 lead in the top of the fourth.
 
Lane would tack on three more runs in the top of the fifth for a 12-2 lead before Claflin bats came to life.
 
With one out in the bottom of the fifth Langston walked then stole second to get into scoring position.  Langston subsequently scored off an RBI single by Fowler on the very next at-bat.
 
The next two batters reached base via singles – Parker and Sprull, who had an RBI single to score Fowler.
 
Eric McElveen reached on a fielder's choice to score Parker for the third run of the inning which cut the deficit to seven, 12-5.
 
Claflin defense held Lane scoreless over the final three innings while its offense continued to remain hot.
 
The Panthers scored one run off one hit in the bottom of the seventh and scored five runs off two hits in the bottom of the eighth en route to its one run victory.
 
Claflin will return to action this Tuesday, Mar. 20 when they travel to Tigerville, S.C. to face the Knights of North Greenville in non-conference action.  The single game is set for 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
