Orangeburg, S.C. -- The Claflin University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with USC-Aiken Wednesday (Mar. 28), winning game one 9-8 and falling in game two 5-0. The win in game one also ends a six-game slide. The Split pushes the Lady Panthers record to 14-22 overall. USC-Aiken goes to 9-24.
Claflin was led in the doubleheader by
Kaela Robinson who finished with three runs with two hits.
Tiaria Norman had two runs with four hits and one RBI while
Shaquailla German had four hits with two RBIs.
USC Aiken was led by Jessica Stanley with three hits, with two runs and two RBIs. Hannah Price had three hits with two RBIs for the Pacers in the split.
Claflin battled from an 8-2 deficit in the middle of the fifth in game one to secure the victory.
After a leadoff walk by Robinson in the bottom of the inning, Norman doubled to centerfield to move Robinson into scoring position. Norman's double was followed by a single down the right-field line to score Robinson from third for the Lady Panthers third run of the game.
Claflin fourth run came off a sacrifice fly by
Jada Ames to score Norman. The inning ended with a groundout to first base.
After holding the Pacers scoreless in the top of the sixth, the Lady Panthers exploded for five runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.
USC-Aiken could not score in the top of the seventh inning.
Norman, who came in on relief to pitch 2 1/3 innings, picked up her ninth win of the season.
Carolina Cockrell was the losing pitcher of game one.
After neither team crossed the plate in the opening inning in game two, USC-Aiken used two hits to score one run in the top of the second.
The Pacers offense and defense remained solid over the course of the game.
USC-Aiken scored two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth en route to its five runs.
The Pacers collected seven hits in the game while holding Claflin to just five over the seven innings.
German, who pitched just two innings, was credited with the loss and Price was the winner of game two.
Claflin will return to Dahlonega, Ga. next Wednesday (Apr. 4) to take on the University of North Georgia.
