Saginaw Valley State Rally to Defeat Claflin

Orangeburg, S.C. (2-8-18) – Wyatt Pimental hit a three-run homer with one-out in the top of the ninth inning as Saginaw Valley State University rallied to defeat Claflin University 4-2 in a non-conference baseball game on Thursday at Mirmow Field.

The loss dropped Claflin season record to 2-17. Saginaw Valley State is now 9-2.

The Panthers entered the ninth leading 2-1, thanks to an RBI triple by Johnathan Parnell II in the eighth that drove home pinch-runner Ashtin Knowles, breaking a 1-1 tie.

Parnell II was the top hitter for Claflin with three hits and a run scored.

The Panthers other run result from double play off the bat of Grayland Fowler that scored Parnell.

Aaron Perry, who relieved Panther starter Harold Smith in the seventh, gave up the Cardinals three runs in the ninth.

Smalls held Saginaw Valley State scoreless with a pair of singles over six innings of work while striking out six batters.

Perry, the loser for Claflin, allowed four hits and fanned four in three innings.

Alec Justin was the winning pitcher for the Cardinals, while Jordan Swiss picked up the save, retiring the last two Panther batters with the tying runner at the plate.

Claflin will return to the baseball diamond on Saturday (Feb. 10) at Mirmow Field against St. Augustine's University in a non-conference double-header, starting at 1 p.m.
