Claflin Wins Final Home Series 2-1 over Clark Atlanta

Lady Panthers Honor Senior Members

Orangeburg, S.C. (Apr. 13-14) – Claflin University went 2-1 against Clark conference series of 2018.  The Lady Panthers defeated CAU 9-1 in five innings on Friday (Apr. 13) and split a doubleheader on Saturday (Apr. 14), coming from behind to win game one 7-5 and dropping the final game of the series 10-7.
 
The wins pushes Claflin to 19-25 overall and 11-5 in the SIAC.  CAU goes to 4-23 overall and 4-11 in the SIAC.
 
The senior members of the softball team were honored in a pre-game ceremony on Saturday.
 
Senior Tiaria Norman went 2-1 on the mound for Claflin while Ajada Cofield went 1-1 over the weekend and Shalonda Woods was the losing pitcher in game one on Saturday for Clark Atlanta.
 
In the doubleheader opener on Saturday, Claflin had to battle back from 5-1 down to secure the victory.
 
The Lady Panthers put up six runs in the bottom of the five to take 7-5 lead.
 
Chelise Morman reached base on an error by the shortstop to lead off the inning.  Kayla Cato reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a pass ball.  With one run in scoring position and two outs, Norman reached base via a walk giving Claflin two runners on the pads.  Shaquailla German hit an RBI single up the middle to score Cato and move Norman into scoring position.
 
The Lady Panthers continued to capitalize on the mistakes of CAU in the inning as Jada Ames reached base via an error by third base to load the bases.
 
After a RBI walk, Jasmine Squirewell hit a bases clearing triple which was followed by a RBI single by KaShaira Givens for Claflin six run of the inning.  Morman grounded out to second base to end the inning.
 
Cato recorded two runs with one hit to lead Claflin in game one.
 
Clark Atlanta got two hits from Jacey Gray, Sholanda Woods and Caitlyn Williams had two hits each for Clark Atlanta.  Kiana Turner one hit, a homerun, and two runs for Clark Atlanta.
 
Clark Atlanta scored two runs in the top of the third to break a 1-1 tie and to take a 3-1 lead in game two of the doubleheader.
 
Claflin countered in its half of inning, using five hits to score four runs to take its first lead of the game.  With one out, LaKaylin Lee doubled down the leftfield line and advanced on to second on a wild pitch.  Following a single by Norman and a RBI single by German, Ames hit a three-run homer to give the Lady Panthers its lead.
 
Claflin scored two additional runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-3 lead.
 
CAU offense was not done as they scored one run in the top of the sixth and used five hits, including a three-run homerun by Cofield, to score six runs in the seventh en route to capturing the game three win.
 
Lee went 2-for-4 with three runs and Ames went 2-for-four with one run and three RBIs for Claflin in the loss.
 
Caitlyn Williams was 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs for Clark Atlanta in the win.
 
Claflin dominated the opening game of the series on Friday (Apr. 13). 
 
The Lady Panthers scored one run in the first, four in the second and three in the third en route to its 9-1 win.
 
Lee was dominated in the contest going 3-for-3 with three runs, including a three-run homerun, with four RBIs.
 
Cato went 2-for-3 for two runs and a RBI.
 
Sharnitra Woods scored the lone run for Clark Atlanta.
 
Claflin will travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to face Converse College in a mid-week non-conference game.  First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
