Claflin Shutout Converse in Non-Conference Doubleheader

Duncan, S.C. – Claflin University pitchers did not allow any hits as they shutout Converse College Wednesday (Apr. 18) in a non-conference softball doubleheader, 8-0 and 9-0, at Tyger River Park in Duncan, S.C.

The wins push the Lady Panthers overall record to 21-24.  Converse falls to 3-45 on the season.

Claflin pitchers kept Converse hitters in check, allowing just six walks while striking out 19 batters.

In game one, Tiaria Norman struck out 10-of-18 batters faced and allowed four walks in five innings to pick up the win.  Shaquailla German pitched a complete game (seven innings), striking out nine batters with two walks in gaining the game two victory.

The Lady Panthers offense was equally effective across the doubleheader recording 11 hits off Converse pitchers -- six in game one and 11 in game two.

Six different players recorded hits in game one while seven recorded hits in game two.  Jada Ames, Mercedes Howze, German and Norman had two hits apiece in game two.

Kayla Cato, Claflin leading hitter, was the only player to have extra base hits as she knocked out a RBI triple in game one and a solo homerun, her 13th on the season in game two.

Claflin will return to Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) play this weekend when they travel to Columbia, S.C. to face intra-state rivals, Benedict College, in a three-game series. The opening game of the series is set for Saturday, Apr. 21 at 1 p.m.  The series will conclude with a doubleheader on Sunday, Apr. 22 beginning at 1 p.m.
