Francis Marion Defeats Claflin in Baseball

Orangeburg, S.C. -- Francis Marion University (FMU) defeated Claflin University 18-6 in a non-conference baseball contest on Wednesday (Apr. 18) at Mirmow Field.

The loss, Claflin second to FMU this season, dropped the Panthers to 13-26 overall. The Panthers will return to action this weekend in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division series against intra-state rival Benedict College Tigers.

The three-game series will be played on separate days, starting Friday (Apr. 20) in Greenville, S.C. on Fluor Field, home of the Greenville Drive, as part of the HBCU Classic at 7:30 p.m. That game will be followed by a Sunday (Apr. 22) contest at Benedict's Tiger Field starting at 1 p.m. The third game is slated for Monday (Apr. 23) at Spirit Communications Park, home of the Columbia Fireflies in Columbia, S.C. for the Inaugural Capital City Baseball Classic. That game gets underway at 6 p.m.

FMU improved to 16-27 with the win.

In the contest, FMU jumped out to a commanding 10-1 lead after three innings. The only bright spot for Claflin during that stretch, was a solo homerun by Eric McElveen, his second of the season, in the second inning.

The score remained that way until the Panthers offense erupted for five runs in the seventh, cutting the FMU lead to 10-6. The inning was highlighted by a three-run homer off the bat of Johnathan Parnell II, his seventh of the season to go with 31 RBIs. Claflin's other two runs were unearned.

FMU responded with eight runs in the eighth-inning, breaking the game open at 18-6.

The Panthers had seven hits in the game with Parnell II collecting three. Darrell Langston had two, including a triple for Claflin while and Tavion Towers added a double and McElveen's homerun.

Francis Marion was led by C.J. Mackinson going 5-for-5 at the plate with a homerun and five RBIs. Trey Chapman added a homerun and 3 RBIs for the Patriots.

Antonio Reneo, 1-1, was the winning pitcher for Francis Marion, while Chazz Walker, 0-2, took the loss for Claflin.
