Claflin Baseball Defeat Paine to Secure SIAC Series Win

Orangeburg, S.C. – The Claflin University Baseball team put up 12 hits with nine RBIs en route defeating Paine College, 12-7, in the third game of a Southern Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (SIAC) three-game series at Historic Mirmow Field.  The win gives the Panthers the 2-1 series win.  The teams split a doubleheader on last Saturday (Mar. 31).
 
With the win, Claflin improves its season worksheet to 10-21 overall and 6-2 in the SIAC.  Paine falls to 11-13 overall and 6-3 in the SIAC.
 
Darrell Langston, the Panthers leading hitter, paced Claflin with two runs, two hits, including his ninth homerun on the season, a walk and a RBI.
 
Grayland Fowler was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI while Craig Hopkins and Clyde Parker finished the game with two runs each.
 
Harold Smith had three hits on the day.
 
Paine was led by Jaylin McMichael and Anthony Ellis who had two runs and three hits, respectively.
 
The Lions opened the scoring of the game putting up one run in the top of the first.
 
With two on and one out in the bottom of the first, Eric McElveen hit single up the middle to bring in Langston and Fowler for Claflin first two runs of the game. 
 
The Panthers third run of the inning came off a sacrifice fly by Craig Hopkins to score Jalen Sprull.
 
Smith struck out looking to end the inning with Claflin up 3-1.
 
The Panthers never lost the lead.
 
Paine put up one run in the top of the second to close the gap to 3-2 but Claflin kept the pressure on.
 
After going scoreless in the bottom of the second, the Panthers tacked on two runs in the bottom of the third, a run by Hopkins off a RBI by Parker and Parker scored via an errant throw to the catcher.
 
Neither team managed to cross the plate in the fourth, but the Lions found some offense in the top of the fifth, putting up two runs to cut the deficit to one, 5-4.
 
The Panthers remained poised, scoring three runs in their half of the inning to push the lead back to four, 8-4.
 
Claflin increased its lead to eight, 12-4, scoring one run in the sixth and three in the seventh.
 
After a scoreless eighth, Paine's offense became aggressive in the top of the ninth.
 
The Lions used three runs off one hit and one Panther error to pull within five, 12-7, but Claflin's defense would not fold ending the game with a fly out to right field.
 
Torriun Towers, who came in on relief to pitch two and two-thirds inning, was credited with the win.  Towers faced 13 batters allowing no runs with one hit and three walks.
 
Savon Doolittle was the losing pitcher for Paine.
 
The Panthers will be back in action this Wednesday, Apr. 4 when they travel to Florence, S.C. to take on Francis Marion University in a non-conference game. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
