Claflin Softball Sweeps Benedict in SIAC Doubleheader

Lady Panthers win Series 3-0

Columbia, SC— The Claflin University softball team swept Benedict, 11-0 and 12-6, in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) doubleheader, Sunday (Apr. 22) at Tiger Field in Columbia.  With the wins, the Lady Panthers takes the conference series 3-0.
 
Claflin, now 24-25 overall and 14-5 in the SIAC, has won its last 10-of-11 contests.
 
Benedict drops to 22-13 overall and 8-9 in the SIAC.
 
Tiaria Norman was the winning pitcher in both contests.  In the opening game of the doubleheader Norman went five innings allowing just one hit with four strikeouts and two walks.  Norman came in on relief in game two to pitch five and two-third innings, allowing only one hit with eight strikeouts.
 
Cherica Pye was the losing pitcher for Benedict in both contests.
 
Claflin was led at the plate by Kayla Cato who finished the doubleheader with seven hits, including three doubles, a homerun and three RBIs.
 
Kaela Robinson went 1-for-2 with a double, two runs, a walk and a RBI in game one while Mercedes Howze went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and a RBI in game two.
 
Brianna Billie had the lone hit in game one and one hit with two runs and a walk in game two for Benedict.
 
Khayreyah Parris, Erika Dargan, Starkeira Daniel and Sharik Woods had one run each in game two for the Lady Tigers.
 
Claflin will close out the 2018 regular season on Wednesday, Apr. 25 when they travel to Aiken, S.C., to take on USC-Aiken in a non-conference doubleheader.
 
The Lady Panthers will then travel to Albany, Ga. to participate in the 2018 SIAC Softball Championships.
